Hair extensions during Lockdown

We’ve been told repeatedly to head to our hairdresser for anything hair extension related, but how should we look after them during lockdown?

We turn to hair extension experts Fernando Spano and Kelly May for the lowdown.

How should I shampoo my hair?

“When shampooing tape extensions, you brush your extensions through first using a paddle brush to remove any tangles. Wet hair down thoroughly, ring the water out of your hair and apply the shampoo to your hands and spread evenly throughout your hair, with gentle circular movements. When shampooing be cautious not to tangle your extensions. Wash your hair twice to ensure hair is cleansed as extensions tend to hold onto dirt and impurities more so than your actual hair” says Kelly May. Nando adds “ keratin bond extensions can be washed normally”.

Can I use conditioner when I am wearing extensions?

Conditioner is a must when wearing extensions as it helps to keep the extensions hydrated and beautiful. However it should be applied only from mid lengths to ends to avoid loosening and/or damaging the bonds and glue.

Which shampoo and conditioner do you recommend for hair extensions?

“For tape extensions I tend to recommend Olaplex No4 shampoo & Olaplex No5 conditioner. Olaplex will insure you are getting the most out of your extensions. It transforms your extensions leaving them feeling and looking beautiful” says Kelly May. Nando Spano, on the other hand recommends a sulphate free shampoo for bond extensions.

What does cleansing your hair extensions mean and should you do it? If so how?

Cleansing your extensions is an indispensable process and necessity if you wear hair extensions as you tend to accumulate a build-up of product and impurities. Nando and Kelly recommend for both tape and bond , that you use a clarifying shampoo such as L’Oreal Pure resource once every two weeks.

My extensions are too grown out, can I remove them by myself?

Neither Kelly or Nando recommend attempting to remove your extensions yourself as it may cause irreversible damage to your hair. Chances are if you are wearing tapes, they will slip out over time! If this happens Kelly recommends applying conditioner to the root of the tape which will loosen it, however you should not attempt to pull it out. When it comes to Keratin bonds, Nando suggests applying a strong mask over the bonds for 30 minutes. This however should not be applied to fresh extensions.

Can I use heat appliances?

Kelly says heat appliances can be used on hair extensions as long as you use a heat protector such as L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni art heat constructor. This should be applied to dry hair and styled as required. Nando adds ; “ Make sure you don’t apply heat to the bond”.

Should I do hair masks, if so which ones?

Yes you can use a hair mask. I recommend only using a mask on the middle and ends of your extensions you can apply a small amount to the natural hair that is left out. Always choose a hair mask for your hair type. For coloured hair, I recommend Kérastase Reflection Masque Chromatique it helps reduce colour fade and colour stays true and vibrant, while hair is left feeling nourished, supple with an intense shine.

How should I brush my hair and which brush do you recommend?

When brushing your extensions, split your hair into two sections. Using the Neville oval paddle bristle brush, start from the bottom working your way up to the roots. Don’t pull on the extensions but hold the hair while brushing.

How should I dry and style my extensions?

When styling and drying your extensions at home, I always advise applying a heat protector on towel dried hair. Your hair should then be rough dried 100%. Using a bristle brush smooth our your natural hair. You can then choose to use either a curling iron or straightener depending on the desired look. Just be sure not to go over the bonds or tapes.

Any particular styling product you recommend for extensions?

For styling hair extensions, we recommend Olaplex No6. bond smoother. This is a nourishing styling creme which eliminates frizz. Resulting in your hair being left moisturised with a silky finish. To compliment Olaplex No6. you can use Olaplex No7. bonding oil to add extra shine and minimise flyway’s.

Metehan’s battle

Altruism, is when a person shows selfless concern for the well-being of others. A beautiful trait of character that I hold dear to heart and have also taken great pride in observing amongst some of my team members. In particular our colour director Seniz Alkan who recently decided to help raise awareness and funds for a little boy called Metehan. Metehan was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy type 1 - a neuromuscular disease so severe that many children with SMA type 1 do not reach the age of two.

As SMA is a rare disease, Novartis charges a huge fee to cover their R&D costs and make a profit: Zolgensma costs $2.1 million – with additional expenses such as travel, accommodation and consultancy fees, the total amount of reaches $2.45 million (currently £1.9m). Since deciding to join the cause to help Metehan, Seniz has raised over £100k. As a close friend and colleague I am keen to help raise further awareness about Metehan’s story and terrible disease.

Get your best curly hair yet

Get your best curly hair yet

We believe that 2021 is all about embracing your natural hair’s texture. With curly hair growing increasingly popular we have decided to turn to one of our experts, Kelly May, to get all the tips you need to get your best curly hair yet.

Firstly it’s important to understand that Curls can change over time, says Kelly May. You can go from having soft waves to tighter curls. Your hair goes through cycles that can change every several years. Pregnancy has also been known to change a woman’s hair. This can be due to post pregnancy hormones and the loss of hair. Post pregnancy your hair can grow back with a different texture and sometimes much curlier.

Whatever your type of curl or its cyclical changes, it is important to protect them. May, recommends sleeping on a silk pillow case or wearing a silk head turban at night. “ This will help reduce breakage and cause less friction when you are sleeping” adds May. To ensure healthy curls, it’s important to wash your hair in a certain way and ensure you indulge in regular conditioning treatments. Curls require a lot of hydration.

May advises, hair be brushed before it is washed and again when you apply conditioner. This helps eliminate the frizz. Use clarifying shampoo first, followed by a moisture based curl defining shampoo. The thickness of your hair will then determine what your curls need whether its moisture, protein, frizz control or volume. Curly hair has a tendency to require more moisture than most other hair types.

So what is the best brush to use for curly hair? At Neville, we recommend using a flat paddle brush or a denman brush. These are gently on your curls and great for tangles. Always remember to brush your hair when it is wet with conditioner or alternatively prior to washing it.

For those of you struggling with your curls and looking into potential treatments to help reduce frizz, we recommend Tanino Therapy, a chemical free smoothing treatment that will maintain your curl at the same time.

When it comes to styling using the right products is paramount. For rebellious curly hair, May recommends using the Kerastase discipline range which is great for managing thicker curls and frizz for a smooth and shinier finish.

If you are looking to embrace your natural curls or alternatively achieve a smooth blowdry, we recommend using L’Oreal Professionnel Tecni Art Liss control.

If you are opting for a curly style, it helps define the curls. Liss control is a light weight product with maximum effect. Alternatively, if you wish to smooth your hair liss control will help you achieve shiny and smooth hair.

Power Hair Cut 2021

Strength and resilience is so often shown through hair. Power hairstyles have been created through the centuries, for example the Victory Roll post World War Two. Neville Salon predict the return of the Chanel power Cut. An investment cut that shouts 'we will not be thwarted post pandemic.’

Elena Lavagni, Director of Neville says, 'Coco Chanel once said post World War 1.‘ The first world war made me, I woke up in 1919 famous’. Already the phone is off the hook at Neville Salon since yesterday’s announcement. We all deserve to look and feel fabulous after this tricky year and at Neville that is what we are all about - spoiling our clients.’

Whether you're looking for something soft and short, a choppy Pixie crop or just lifting your bob a few inches to lobe-length, lopping the lot away can feel utterly liberating – like shaking off the weight of a heavy year (we're speaking about you, 2020). This cut is everything that represents a strong spirit in a woman. The jaw defined by the chin length hair with a very blunt fringe. Super sophisticated and classy.

Both long-term converts and new-comers can benefit from something more drastic, since short cuts are as versatile as they are easy to maintain. Plus, they're easier to pull off than you'd think, once you find the right shape for you... In fact, there's nothing like pruning back layers of hair to help open up your face and make the most of your features – hello there, cheekbones.

Ahead of the hairdressers reopening, it's well worth considering all your options and getting an idea of the type of crop that could work for you. You could dip your toe in with a slightly longer length chop – like a lob, or the short (but not too-short) collar bone bob.

If you want to take it up a notch, you could take the French bob we've been eyeing up all summer for a spin. It's short, it's flirty and oozes serious style and says ‘I've invested in my hair’. What is sure is that this power cut has resurrected itself post pandemic.

Neville scalp facial

Neville Scalp Facial

During this very stressful unprecedented time, people are seeing physical effects of their stress and angst. These physical effects can include irritable skin such as eczema and psoriasis and temporary hair loss also known astelogen effluvium. Unfortunately, there is no way to stop an episode of telogen effluvium, but we can help to prevent it by keeping a healthy clean and cared for scalp. Hair is made up of primarily protein (keratin), so it’s no surprise that sufficient protein is vital to maintain and grow hair. Also, be sure to avoid very tight hairstyles, excessive heat styling, or chemical-based treatments, as these can contribute to hair loss and irritable scalp.

It is very important to keep the scalp clean and purified from the pollution and build up from products - this could create scalp inflammation and scalp problems. We have just re-launched the scalp facial at Neville Hair & Beauty which can help cleanse the scalp like you would your skin in a facial. It is important to treat your scalp like you would any other part of your body - keep it clean and hydrated.

It is vital that you steer away from dry shampoo - it is the biggest enemy for your scalp unless you have regular scalp facials. Dry shampoo creates a build up on your scalp and can be difficult to remove with an at home shampoo. This in turn can create a film which could give you oily hair and blocked follicles.

The secret to a long lasting blowdry and style is a clean scalp. A clean scalp keeps the hair follicles cleaner for longer, and in good health.

What is Neville Hair & Beauty doing to help combat this?

The Scalp Facial is a newly revisited treatment that targets the health of the scalp.

The quest for healthy, full, shiny hair begins with a healthy scalp. If you think how dirty your body gets after a day, then imagine what your hair and scalp contend with… hands, sweat, the back of bus and Tube seats and environmental pollution. In the same way that using the right skin care can help our skin to look healthier and younger, using regular scalp masks to exfoliate and stimulate can help promote a healthy scalp and hair.

When it comes to this extra dose of TLC, it is Neville’s view that Londoners are the most in need. “One of the main factors that affect the condition of the scalp is stress, which is particularly common with Londoners who have highly pressurised jobs, as it can stimulate more androgens, the male hormones that can be responsible for hair thinning, and it can also exacerbate dandruff. As our hair is made of the protein keratin, a poor diet can also contribute to the cause of hair loss. With Londoners working longer hours, people are often tempted to eat takeaways or ready meals, which aren’t rich in the nutrients our bodies need.” comments Elena Lavagni, owner of Neville Hair and Beauty, which has tended to the attention-starved follicles of many celebrities and aristocrats in its 30 years.

They begin by brushing hair from roots to tips to shift the natural oils from the scalp through to the ends, a manual exfoliation. They then slather the head with a chosen organic oil, be it bergamot, rosemary or eucalyptus to cleanse and rejuvenate. A head tingling shiatsu massage is carried out then your hair is popped in for a15-minute steam.

The scalp is rinsed with a tonic and then hair receives the famous Neville Blow Dry.

This follicle refreshment takes an hour and will give lifeless hair, itchy scalp a whole new life.

£120 including a blowdry.

Redken X BTC Competition

Throughout the month of September Redken hosted a UK Instagram competition with the infamous Behind The Chair social account inviting colourists around the country to share the very best of their colour transformations using the #redkenxbtc.

Seniz Alkan – Colour Director, who began her career 18 years ago when she started working a Neville Hair & Beauty is a huge fan of the Redken products and jumped at the opportunity to enter the competition.

Having trained as a colourist at the salon and having since worked her way up to Colour Director at the salon, Seniz’s experience has enabled her to develop many colour techniques influenced by her work travels around the globe.

Seniz never stops learning and developing colour trends, and she regularly travels to Los Angeles where she has visited top salons including John Barrett, Tracy Cunningham and Ramirez Tran where she met top colourist to the stars Anja Burton 8 years ago.

Anja and Seniz have since worked together on creating a new variation to the classic Ombre/ Balyage, the Ombralayage, which is exclusive to Neville Hair & Beauty.

Ever the innovator, Seniz, who practices from her own ‘Colour Pod’ at the salon, has created trend after trend seen on the likes of London’s top press, including her new Silhouette Slicing technique she pioneered Spring 2020.

It was in her new Pod that Seniz bleached her client Bria's hair to platinum blonde. A winning look according to Redken and Behind The Chair who awarded Seniz with second place.

Alkan says; "Bria has very fine and brittle Afro Caribbean hair but she was keen to undergo a drastic colour transformation. After our initial consultation we agreed that a platinum blonde would be the ultimate colour for her. To achieve this colour, I used Flashlift with Bonder + 20 Vol to enable me to leave the bleach on as long as I could without compromising the condition of her hair. This mixture meant I was able to lift all the undertones and unwanted colour and achieve the brightness necessary for a platinum blonde. We then proceeded to tone with 9B + 9V + 9P in equal amounts leaving the toner on for 15 minutes on dry hair. It’s important the toner is applied on dry hair for maximum absorption."

Introducing Silhouette Slicing

The Silhouette Slicing Technique by Top Colour Director Seniz.

Put down the make-up brushes now, there’s a new form of contouring in hand that’s gone to the head. The Silhouette Slicing Technique by Top Colour Director Seniz.

The technique comes down to total talent and an artistic eye – it’s about shadow placement and a clever use of light and dark tones that throw shadow and light onto her clients face in just the right places. The look isn’t just for models, there’s a colour contouring prescription for everyone, whether applied to highlight a specific area or blended to create a more uniform impression of lightness and depth.

Seniz explains, “ It’s my job to tailor every detail to your unique hair type and natural colour, facial features, skin tone, makeup, clothing and lifestyle."

Silhouette Slicing is a contouring colouring technique that takes into consideration your individual face shape (long, round or square) using a combination of foil highlights placed in an upside triangle with the positioning of different tones and depths to create shadows.

For example, Heart Shaped Faces - “Lighter pieces are woven around the jawline and ears to soften the bottom half of the face. By mixing fine, light tones with depth at the roots, the face takes on a slightly more oval shape.”

Once the contouring around the face is done, Seniz applies foils on the crown to connect the colour of the upside-down triangle with the ends. This creates a colour balance between roots and end. In this case less is always more. The service takes 45 minutes to apply.

The idea behind this service is to enable clients to go blonder without compromising the health of their hair. Bye bye backcombing.

The contour and connection service means that your hair looks blonder, the service is low maintenance and there will be no division of colour when you tie your hair up.

This service is suitable for women who wear their hair wavy. It is not suitable for straight limp hair.

As for achieving a harmonious colour match for your skin tone, put your faith in Seniz and her knowledge on the Redken Flashlift collection.

Seniz goes onto explain, "Everything can be divided into either a ‘cool’ or ‘warm’ spectrum. Cool indicates blue undertones and warm will have intrinsic yellow, so it’s important to identify the correct shade of blonde, red or brunette that will suit your colouring, both in terms of tone and depth. As hairdressers we can create the right colour shade and depth that will ultimately flatter and enhance a client’s beauty, making them look youthful and healthy whether they are wearing makeup or not.”

Silhouette Slicing not only gives you the hair colour that is made specifically for you it will instantly boost your complexion.
