Restore and revive your hair ahead of spring

Restore and revive your hair ahead of spring.

Winter months are known to cause havoc on our hair due to the lack of moisture in the air, so if you have a classic case of winter hair, read on! We turn to senior colourist & stylist Domenico Casella to understand what really happens to our hair during those winter months and why, as well as the best products and treatments available to get your hair back into shape before spring.

So, what causes hair breakage?

There are a multitude of reasons why you may be experiencing breakage over winter months explains Domenico. First and foremost, your hair’s exposure to harsh cold elements such as rain, wind and snow and secondly the constant transition between cold weather and heated indoors. More often than not, this will cause your hair to be stripped from its moisture. Add to that, frequent colouring and the use of heat tools such as curling irons, straighteners or a hairdryer, and it’s easy enough to understand why your hair might be in distress. Not to mention a probably less attentive approach to nutrition, meaning your intake of protein, biotin, zinc of Omega 3 is lower than usual.

The degree of breakage will vary from person to person, with some people experiencing staticky hair, split ends or even hairline breakage.

It is important to note that hairline breakage occurs as the hair around the face tends to be finer than the rest of your hair. This can be caused by excessive bleaching, chemical treatments or repeated wear of high-tension hairstyles.

How to prevent breakage?

Although it may take time to reverse the signs of breakage, there are simple steps that can be taken and included in your haircare routine to prevent breakage from the get go.

This includes:

  • Avoid rubbing your hair with a towel and instead dab hair to remove excess water as wet hair is prone to break more easily.
  • Use a large paddle brush to untangle your hair after it has been washed and start from the tips working your way up and never the other way around.
  • Always apply a heat protector before using any heat appliance. Domenico recommends a lightweight spray heat protector for oily and fine hair, and a creamy / oily textured protector for thicker hair.
  • Do not colour your hair at home, always seek professional advice.
  • Maintain a healthy diet.
  • Wear a protective hairstyle such as braids or messy buns.
  • Swap metallic or ceramic brushes for wooden brushes.
  • Regular visits to the salon to your trusted professional, who can recommend an appropriate haircare routine for your specific requirements.

However, if the damage is done fear not! At Neville Hair and Beauty, we have developed an extensive list of treatments designed to tackle pretty much any hair concern and breakage features at the top of our list. But before we dive into the different professional treatments available, it is important to understand growth cycle and how long it is likely to take your hair to recover.

What is the hair growth cycle?

There are 4 stages in your natural hair cycle: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen & Exogen.

  • Anagen: Also commonly known as the ‘Active Phase’ refers to the phase when the cells in the root of your hair are dividing the most rapidly and therefore forming new hair. During this phase, your hair grows at an average of 15cm a year. The ‘Active Phase’ generally lasts between 3-5 years but can vary.
  • Catagen: Following the Anagen phase your hair will enter a 10-day phase called Catagen. This is a short transitional phase which signals the end of the hair growth. It also cuts the blood flow from the cells which produce new hair.
  • Telogen: After the transitional period, your hair will enter the telogen phase, also known as the resting period. This phase lasts approximately 3 months and simply means that during that time your hair will not actively grow.
  • Exogen: The last stage in the hair growth cycle is Exogen, and as the name suggests, it refers to the phase where you shed hair.

Once the cycle is complete, the process will start again. It is important to note that each hair follicle has its individual growth cycle, otherwise we’d frequently end up with no hair.

With that in mind, it is likely to take between 4-6 months to completely restore the health of your hair providing you follow your stylist’s advice.

The five most googled hair questions of 2022

The five most googled hair questions of 2022

Beauty and haircare are an ever-growing segment with more and more people interested to discover how to become the best version of themselves. Like with most life queries, google has become the go-to platform for answers! So to avoid you landing on the wrong type of advice, we turned to professional hair stylist and colourist Domenico Casella to get you the safest answers to the top hair questions on Google in 2022.

How to curl your hair with a straightener? If you want to curl your hair with a straightener, you should star off by washing your hair, using your favourite shampoo and conditioner. Then once the hair is towel dried, apply heat protector on damp hair and rough dry hair completely if your hair is naturally smooth, or blowdry your hair smooth otherwise. Section the hair, depending on the density of the hair, and start from mid lengths. Place the straightener diagonally as you pinch the first section of hair and slowly rotate half a turn and glide the straightener down the hair. Once the section has cooled down repeat on the same section. Once the entire head of hair is done, use a large tooth comb to modernise the curls.
How to cut your own hair? I would never recommend anyone cut their own hair as it is a recipe for disaster. Instead seek the help and advice of a professional who will be able to advise the best style to suit your facial features and lifestyle. You will never achieve a professional finish by cutting your own hair.
How to grow hair faster? A considered haircare regimen is the key to helping hair grow faster. This should combine all of the following options:
  1. Regular haircuts ( every 6 weeks)
  2. Using the correct shampoo and conditioner for your hair and scalp type.
  3. Regular in salon hair treatments to help boost and maintain the condition of your hair.
  4. A healthy diet as nutrition plays a fundamental role in hair growth. Hair mirrors your inner wellbeing.
How often should you wash your hair? This very much depends on your scalp condition. I wouldn’t recommend washing your hair more than 2/3 times per week if your hair and scalp are dry. In case of an oily scalp, the type of shampoo used is fundamental. You will need a shampoo designed for daily use which is gentle and allows you to wash your hair daily if required without attacking the hydrolipid layer of the scalp.
How do you get dye off your skin? At Neville Hair and Beauty before we apply any colour, we always apply a protective oil around the hairline. Any type of greasy oil works in this case, just make sure to avoid the hair! Once the colour has been washed off, if the skin is is stained I recommend using makeup remover.

Jack Merrick Thirlway heads the WHITE SHOW 2022

CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS – the WHITE SHOW 2022

The White Show is an annual showcase in December where each first-year fashion design student at Central Saint Martin’s creates a single look in white fabric. A greatly anticipated event of the first term, it is one of the longest running projects on BA Fashion at the college and is conceived, organised and promoted by first year students on BA Fashion Journalism & Communication. This year the theme was @theplayground_22J (experimental, sensory, surreal, playful, strange, graphical)

L’Oréal Professionnel Paris have an ongoing partnership with Central Saint Martin’s supporting creative young design talent, and this year invited hairstylist Jack Merrick-ThirlwayJ at Neville Hair & Beauty to create the hair looks and lead the @lorealproJ hair-team to style the hair for all 140 students who each modelled one look. The team included three @lorealpro ID Artists who take part in a two-year education and development program for talented hairstylists.

  • Jack Merrick-Thirlway/Neville Hair & Beauty
  • Amelia Circale/Yoke the Salon
  • Alex Anfield/Linton & Mac
  • Elisa Doherty/Sally Montague
  • Gokhan Berber/Neville Hair & Beauty
  • Phoebe Carraro/Seanhanna
  • Samantha Thacker/Mack Hairdressing
  • Stephen Campbell/Hair & Co
  • Vishali Visavadia/Georges Hairdressing

Lead stylist Jack Merrick-Thirlway shares how to get the look:
As the theme was the Playground we had a combination of some simple looks with a strong parting and gelled back at the sides to compliment more complex garments, and more abstract graphic shapes to enhance simple garments, with multiple little knots, looped ponytails and gelled tendrils.

For the simpler look, put in a strong centre parting slick back the sides using L’Oréal Professionnel Techni.Art Fix Design. For models with longer hair, spray Techni.Art Full Volume Mousse through the lengths and brush well and diffuse to keep the texture and shape. For those with natural texture, spritz with Curl Expression curl reviver and style to enhance the shape and use Curl Expression 10 in One mousse to smooth back around the face.

For the boys, we kept the strong centre parting and gelled back the hair to give a clean slightly quirky silhouette

For the more graphic updos, spritz the hair with water and put in a strong centre parting. Then spray the sides with Tecni.art Fix Design and Techni.Art Full Volume mousse through the lengths. Brush it back into a smooth ponytail and secure with elastic. Straighten the lengths and flatten using tongs, then loop the lengths around and secure with elastic so the ends are facing up, spray and tong the ends to give a spikey finish. Alternatively divide the hair into sections, brush up and secure each section with elastic and twist the length into a little knot and secure to create multiple little knots.

Shorter hair can be worn slicked back, following the contour and shape of each model’s face, with some fringe pieces pulled across the forehead.

Neville Launches the Herbal Hair Remedy

Neville Launches the Herbal Hair Remedy

To achieve this naturally is an added bonus ad now you can at Neville Hair and Beauty offer a natural cure for hair cuticles and shaft through an herbal hair ritual using the most organic of ingredients.

Italian Hair Healer and Senior colourist at Neville Hair and Beauty, Domenico Casella adores herbology. Ever the advocate of all things natural and organic, Domenico looked into “Officinal” herbs, which consists of plants and herbs used to create medicinal remedies, perfumes and cosmetics, to concoct the perfect treatment, suitable for all hair types, for very dry and stressed hair.

Dry hair can be the result of the imbalances inside and outside our body but most of the time this problem is related to environmental origins. For many people and in particular for women dry hair can be a big aesthetic problem because its dryness effect gives to the hair an unpleasant “straw effect” which gives a neglected feeling to it.

Designed to bring back youth, hydration and moisture to hair, the Neville Hair and Beauty Herbal Hair Ritual is a 4-step treatment by Philip Martin’s made from marshmallow, mountain arnica, soya, barley, Asiatic pennywort, all known for their glowing, nourishing, moisturizing and soothing properties.

  • Step 1: Domenico blends the herbs with hot water, until he reaches a creamy texture and then adds some Philip Martin’s Macadamia oil before blending the mix together.
*For virgin hair Domenico excludes macadamia oil from the blend.
  • Step 2: After having washed the hair and towel dried it, Domenico applies the treatment all over the roots, lengths and ends at the wash station.
  • Step 3: He applies clingfilm over the treatment and places the client under the Climazon for 30 minutes to maximise absorption.
  • Step 4: Domenico then rinses the treatment and proceeds with a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner.

The result is an incredibly silky and glossy finish which lasts for days.

Price starts from £100 for short hair and £150 for long hair.

Hollywood’s best kept secret is out: Neville launches the Face Lift Blow-Dry

Hollywood’s best kept secret has been unveiled and Neville Hair and Beauty have created the technique from the city of angels, which takes years off your face. A technique tweaked by talented senior stylist Afroditi Koutsouki, the Face Lifting blowdry is a small but genius knack that gives a lifted appearance and contours the face giving a tauter, instantaneous snatched face lifted look. Achieved in just under 40 mins, this blowdry is a game changer for those suffering from tired, softer skin.

What happens:

Much like any blowdry, the service begins with a thorough shampoo and conditioner before being rough dried to remove any excess water. Then using a brush and hairdryer, the hair is blowdried to your preference. Afroditi sections the hair and draws in thin strands of hair from either side of your face around the temple area, braids the hair very tightly pulling at the back of the head and secures the two braids with an elastic. She then covers the two braids with the rest of the hair, concealing the invisible face lift. The rest of the hair is then rearranged to ensure that the “procedure” remains unseen.

This instant boost of a dewy collagen glow, or otherwise known blowdry should not be kept for more than 48 hours to avoid prolonged friction and possible hair damage. And because the health of your hair is paramount to us, a safe removal two days after is included in the cost of the service.

Whilst we can’t guarantee you’ll be 100% wrinkle free, the lines on your face will certainly appear faded and skin more taut. Perhaps a solution to delay more invasive procedures?

Beware, this blowdry is highly addictive!
